A 200 km pipeline, carrying CO₂ emissions, is proposed to run through Wirral to a new purpose-built AGI (above ground installation – a huge industrial complex) in Meols, before being transported offshore via pipeline.
The pipeline will run from industrial sites in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, through Cheshire and Wirral, and aims to transport 3 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually from cement and lime plants, with operations starting around 2032.
A multi-billion-pound project – heavily funded by taxpayers
200km pipeline corridor 30–40m wide construction corridor causing widespread disruption
Large-scale AGI (Above Ground Installation) heavily industrial sites
AGIs spanning Chapel-en-le-Frith, Macclesfield, Holmes Chapel and Ellesmere Port
AGIs might be 100m x 100m or more – multiple football pitches in size
Block Valve Stations at regular intervals – up to 50m x 50m
CO₂ transported and stored beneath the seabed – long term impacts uncertain.
Action Against CCS is a formalised, committee-led Community Action Group (CLG) opposing Carbon Capture and Storage infrastructure across the UK, particularly the construction of large-scale CO₂ pipeline corridors, compressor stations and above-ground industrial installations in our communities and countryside.
We are not against industry, jobs or progress. We are pro transparency, pro safety, pro environmental protection and pro meaningful democratic engagement. We believe projects of this scale and permanence must face proper scrutiny before communities are expected to accept the risks and impacts.
Our group brings together people from a wide range of professional backgrounds, allowing us to represent, support and assist affected residents and communities in an informed, organised and professional way.
We will continue to challenge proposals constructively, hold decision-makers to account and ensure local voices are heard clearly throughout this process.to represent, assist, and support the people in our communities and we will make it clear to all parties why these CCS plans should not continue or be implemented.
Action Against CCS has chosen to operate as a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG) rather than a charity or Community Interest Company because our primary role is campaigning and advocacy. Charity law places significant restrictions on political activity and charitable organisations cannot exist mainly to influence government policy or oppose specific developments. As a CLG, Action Against CCS can campaign feely, challenge proposals robustly, support communities openly while still operating professionally and transparently. As a CLG we do not have shareholders to take dividends and therefore we are listed as a ‘not-for-profit.’
